DR Congo jail break leads to investigations

Democratic Republic Of Congo

Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have set up a commission of inquiry to look at the circumstances that led to an attack that targeted the Makala prison in Kinshasa.

The committee is being set up after detainees believed to be in their thousands escaped.

Congolese police has called for public support in finding the jail breakers.
Several phone numbers have also been made available for the public to call and report of any likely persons believed to have escaped.

The ruling Government’s Justice Minister who visited the prison has accused the followers of Bundu Dia Kongo for being responsible for the attack.

“They were congratulating each other here, they were congratulating each other when they were beating our guards. Some people died and they were congratulating each other. And it was them, it is obvious (who killed them). And the aim was to break Ne Muanda Nsemi out of the jail and to create chaos so we have no doubts about who did this,” Justice Minister, Alexis Tambwe Mwamba said.

Ne Muanda Nsemi who is Bundu dia Kongo’s leader, was part of the prisoners freed by the group. He was arrested in March after a series of deadly clashes.

Nsemi has a strong following in the southwestern part of the country. He has showed up strongly in recent times hoping to revive the Kongo kingdom, which gained popularity years ago along the Congo River.
